Overview of Curriculum

Machaneh Shai’s core curriculum is based on three content areas: Hebrew, Torah and Israel. These core building blocks cycle through each grade throughout the year and are taught at appropriate grade levels. As children progress each year, they delve more deeply into each content area.

There are two components to the Hebrew program. One is dedicated to working toward proficient Hebrew reading. We start with the Aleph Bet and progress to decoding multi-syllabic words. The ultimate goal is for students to feel comfortable and proficient in reading prayers in the siddur. The second component of the program is called B’ivrit (in Hebrew). By learning words and phrases through activities and games, students develop a positive connection to Hebrew as a living language.

In Torah, Text and Tradition, students learn that Torah is the foundation of our Jewish lives and the values we live by are based in Torah. By studying specific texts and engaging in experiential activities, children explore specific Jewish values and laws such as: Created in the Image of God, Chesed (Kindness/Compassion), Gratitude, Humility, Community, Hospitality, Visiting the Sick, and Laws of Speech.

Israel is an important component of our Jewish identity. Machaneh Shai uses the Center for Israel Education Curriculum which concentrates on creating a strong connection to and knowledge of Israel. This interactive program focuses on Zionism and the Israeli people, culture, geography, and institutions (government, kibbutz, Israel Defense Force).

On Wednesdays, students have various electives to further explore Jewish values, culture, history, music, food and art. Among these classes are Jewish Life Cycle, where students learn about holidays, rituals, symbols and ceremonies. Travel & Israel takes students on an historic and geographic adventure; making (and eating!) falafel and hummus is a great hit. Art projects, Israeli dance, Judaism and the Environment are a few other highlights of Wednesday’s classes.

Machaneh Shai strongly believes that parents and families are an integral part of their child’s education. There are many opportunities for children and parents to learn together. On certain Sundays throughout the year, parents and children gather together in Beit Midrash (house of study) to study and reflect on Jewish text; the level of discourse in 30 short minutes is amazing. Family holiday programs are fun and interactive celebrations for the whole community.
